LAWMA, EWU-ELEPE COMMUNITIES WORK TOGETHER TO TACKLE WASTE CRISIS

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has engaged residents of communities hosting the Ewu-Elepe Landfill in Ikorodu to address concerns over the facility’s operations and improve waste management in the area.

The engagement, led by LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin, followed complaints from residents of Elepe and Elenuwa communities about the condition of the landfill and access roads.

Gbadegesin said the authority would commence rehabilitation of the landfill when weather conditions permit, while palliative work would be carried out on the access roads to improve movement and reduce pressure caused by waste trucks.

LAWMA also plans to work with the Lagos State Government and other partners on sustainable waste management initiatives, including waste-to-energy, waste-to-wealth, and organic waste composting.

To improve accountability, the agency directed the formation of a joint Task Force and Technical Committee involving host communities, LAWMA, waste operators, and other stakeholders.

The committees will monitor road works, address environmental violations linked to waste trucks, strengthen security, and help improve environmental conditions around the landfill.

LAWMA said continued dialogue and cooperation with host communities would be essential to achieving more efficient waste management while protecting residents’ well-being and the environment.
