The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has disclosed that it evacuated about 418,500 tonnes of waste across Lagos State in the month of May, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness and improve public health standards.

According to a senior official of the agency, the waste evacuation exercise covered residential communities, markets, commercial centres, and major highways across the state. The figure reflects the scale of waste generation in Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city.

The official noted that LAWMA has continued to intensify its operations through daily waste collection, street sweeping, and enforcement against illegal dumping of refuse. He added that the agency is also working to strengthen collaboration with private sector participants involved in waste collection and disposal.

Residents were urged to dispose of waste responsibly and make use of approved waste collection channels, warning that indiscriminate dumping of refuse contributes to flooding, environmental degradation, and public health risks.

The agency reiterated its commitment to achieving a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos, stressing that effective waste management requires cooperation from both government and citizens.

LAWMA also said it is expanding public awareness campaigns to promote proper sanitation practices and reduce environmental pollution across the state.

As urban waste generation continues to rise, officials say the agency is adopting more efficient systems to ensure timely evacuation and improved service delivery.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
