LAWAL REJECTS DIALOGUE WITH BANDITS AS 50 ZAMFARA ELDERS REMAIN CAPTIVE
The Zamfara State Government has ruled out dialogue with armed bandits, even as about 50 community elders reportedly remain in captivity across different parts of the state.
Governor Dauda Lawal reiterated the administration’s position, insisting that negotiations with criminal groups would not be considered as a strategy to address insecurity.
The governor’s stance comes amid continued attacks, kidnappings, and rural displacement affecting several communities in Zamfara.
Security reports indicate that armed groups have sustained pressure on rural settlements, forcing many residents to flee their homes in search of safety.
Government officials say ongoing military operations are being intensified in affected areas to rescue abducted persons and restore normalcy.
According to the state government, engaging in dialogue with armed groups could undermine security operations and embolden criminal activity.
Community leaders, however, have expressed concern over the continued captivity of their members and are calling for urgent rescue efforts.
Security analysts say the situation highlights the complexity of Nigeria’s banditry crisis, particularly in the North-West region.
They note that while some stakeholders advocate negotiation, others insist on military pressure and enforcement as the most effective approach.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to restoring peace and ensuring the safe return of all abducted persons in the state.
