LASU STUDENT DIES AFTER ARMED ROBBERY ATTACK
A student of Lagos State University has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
The deceased, identified as Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, was a student of the Department of History and International Studies in the university’s Faculty of Arts.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Coordinator of the university’s Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr Olaniyi Jeariogbe, the institution said the attack occurred off campus on the night of May 29, 2026, when Otabor and some friends were reportedly attacked by armed robbers.
“The Management of Lagos State University received with profound sadness the news of the death of one of its students, OTABOR Boluwatife Joseph (Matric No. 240341269) of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts, following injuries sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos,” the statement read.
According to the university, management immediately responded after receiving reports of the incident.
The Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, was said to have coordinated support efforts, briefed the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained communication with medical personnel throughout the student’s hospitalisation.
Otabor later died on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
Following his death, representatives of the university reportedly met with his family, officials of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and relevant law enforcement authorities.
LASU stated that it is cooperating with security agencies to ensure a full investigation into the attack and prosecution of those responsible.
“The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” the statement added.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased on behalf of the university community.
The institution prayed for the repose of the student’s soul and called for justice over the incident.
