LASTMA WARNS EVENT CENTRES, NIGHTCLUBS TO STOP BLOCKING LAGOS ROADS
No More Gridlock: LASTMA Cracks Down on Event Centres and Clubs Blocking Lagos Roads
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to event centres, nightclubs, lounges, and party organisers to stop blocking roads and causing traffic jams during social events.
The warning came during a series of unscheduled inspections by LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, who visited several high-traffic areas across Lagos. He expressed frustration over how some venues illegally use public roads for parking and crowd overflow, disrupting free movement and causing unnecessary hardship for other road users.
“No individual or organisation, no matter how influential, is allowed to turn public roads into parking lots or overflow spaces during events,” Bakare-Oki said firmly.
He stressed that such practices not only cause gridlock but also delay emergency services and disrupt daily life for residents.
Going forward, any event centre, nightclub, or venue that blocks access roads or encourages illegal parking will face immediate penalties, including fines and possible prosecution.
To tackle the issue, LASTMA has:
Ordered its zonal commanders and field officers to ramp up surveillance and patrols, especially on weekends and during festive periods.
Urged residents to report traffic violations using LASTMA’s toll-free emergency line.
Encouraged venue operators to engage certified traffic managers or consult with LASTMA for event traffic plans before hosting large gatherings.
Bakare-Oki also called on business owners in the entertainment and hospitality sector to act responsibly.
“This is a shared responsibility. Event organisers must think of public safety and respect the rights of other road users,” he concluded.
