Lasema Reaffirms Readiness For Flood Emergencies In Lagos
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has restated its commitment to tackling any flood-related emergencies during the rainy season.
Speaking on Friday during the launch of the 2025 Flood-Free Lagos Campaign, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said Lagos is well-prepared to handle possible flood situations. The campaign also involved visits to the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the campaign was in response to federal warnings that Lagos is among the states at high risk of flooding this year. “We’ve identified flood-prone areas such as Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Lekki, Apapa, and Amuwo-Odofin. We are fully ready to respond to any emergencies,” he said.
He noted that emergency infrastructure in Lagos has seen major improvements, with a well-equipped Command and Control Centre now operating under a dedicated General Manager. The state’s emergency number, 112, remains active for quick response.
The agency has carried out simulation exercises involving all key emergency responders and has assessed potential risk zones. Three relief camps have also been set up across the state’s senatorial districts, with trained grassroots responders ready to act swiftly.
“Our goal is to build resilient communities because disasters affect people most at the grassroots level,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
He praised the Ministry of Environment for its ongoing work in clearing blocked drainages and removing illegal structures that worsen flooding. “We’re addressing both natural and man-made causes of flooding. Environmental laws are being enforced,” he said.
According to him, the improvements in Lagos’ emergency response—such as lower death and injury rates—are due to the governor’s strong support and investments in modern equipment and technology.
He urged residents to support government efforts by paying their taxes, stressing that emergency management is a collective responsibility.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu also commended LASEPA General Manager Dr. Tunde Ajayi for his leadership and expertise in both medicine and disaster management.
During the event, LASEMA received a delegation from the Ondo State Emergency Management Agency. The team, led by Mr. Wellington Adebawo, visited to learn from LASEMA’s operations. Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu welcomed the visit and expressed readiness to share experiences that can help improve emergency responses in other states.
