LAGOSIANS CALL FOR TOUGHER ACTION AGAINST RISING NOISE POLLUTION

Residents of Lagos State have called for stronger enforcement of existing environmental laws to tackle persistent noise pollution across the metropolis. The demand comes amid growing concerns over excessive noise from religious centres, entertainment venues, event centres and other establishments, with residents urging authorities to ensure that offenders face meaningful sanctions.

The concerns come as the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency continues its enforcement campaign against establishments that breach permissible noise levels. LASEPA has previously sealed several facilities across the state over violations, including venues linked to religious activities, entertainment and other gatherings. The agency has also warned that facilities that continue to violate regulations after sanctions could face permanent closure.

LASEPA General Manager, Babatunde Ajayi, said the agency has sustained enforcement across the state, noting that more than 40 facilities were sealed within a single week during one of its recent operations. He explained that the permissible noise level varies according to the nature of an area, with residential neighbourhoods subject to lower limits than commercial and industrial zones.

The call for tougher enforcement also reflects concerns that existing regulations are not always enough to prevent repeated violations. Lagos State has previously introduced measures requiring establishments such as nightclubs, lounges, bars and worship centres to obtain permits for events involving amplified sound, while a special task force was established to monitor compliance and prosecute offenders.

Residents believe more consistent monitoring, faster responses to complaints and stricter penalties would help reduce the impact of excessive noise on communities. With Lagos continuing to expand enforcement and explore digital monitoring of noise pollution, stakeholders are expected to intensify efforts to ensure that environmental regulations are observed and that residents can enjoy a healthier and more peaceful environment.
