Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed Lagos State’s determination to eliminate malaria, stressing that the government will not relent until the disease is completely wiped out.

Speaking at the Mid-Term Review of the Pathway to Malaria Pre-Elimination held at Eko Hotels, Victoria Island, the governor revealed that malaria prevalence in Lagos has dropped to around 1%—a major milestone in the fight against the disease.

“When we embarked on this initiative in March, our vision was clear: to transform Lagos from a high-burden malaria zone into one on the verge of elimination. Today, the data shows we are closer than ever. Lagos will not rest until malaria is history, not just for us, but as an example for Nigeria and Africa,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor highlighted the success of the state’s digital malaria surveillance system, which now links hospitals, pharmacies, and medicine vendors, enabling real-time tracking and reporting of cases across the state.

“For the first time, we have a platform that makes malaria visible across the state. Every Lagosian must have access to rapid testing and the right treatment at the point of need. No case should be left unreported or unattended,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also urged residents to play their part by destroying mosquito breeding sites, testing before treatment, and making use of formal healthcare services.

With the progress so far, Lagos is positioning itself as a model for malaria elimination efforts in Nigeria and across Africa.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
