LAGOS TO HOST FIRST AKARA FESTIVAL AFRICA CELEBRATION
Lagos is set to host the inaugural edition of Akara Festival Africa, a cultural event designed to celebrate Nigerian food, fashion, music, art and African creativity. The festival is expected to bring together creatives, food enthusiasts, fashion personalities, entertainers and members of the public for a celebration built around the cultural significance and popularity of akara.
The event is an African extension of the Ankara Festival, which has been held for more than 15 years in Los Angeles and other major cities across North America. Organisers said bringing the festival to Lagos represents an effort to establish a stronger connection between its international audience and Africa, while creating a platform for Nigerian and other African creatives to showcase their work.
Beyond food, the festival is expected to feature fashion and entertainment as major parts of the programme. Organisers said the Lagos edition would provide opportunities for designers, artists, musicians, food vendors and other creative professionals to connect with audiences and celebrate African culture in a lively environment. The event is also expected to highlight the way traditional Nigerian experiences can be presented through contemporary creative expression.
The organisers said the festival would serve as a meeting point for culture, business and entertainment, while giving local participants an opportunity to engage with an established international festival brand. They said the decision to stage the African edition in Lagos was influenced by the city's position as a major centre for Nigeria's entertainment, fashion, food and creative industries.
The inaugural Akara Festival Africa is expected to add another event to Lagos' growing calendar of cultural and entertainment activities. Organisers said the festival would seek to build a lasting platform for celebrating African creativity and connecting local talent with international audiences, with plans to develop the Lagos edition into a recurring celebration of food, fashion, music, art and culture.
