LAGOS TASKFORCE SEIZES 668 OKADAS IN STATEWIDE CRACKDOWN
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) has intensified its clampdown on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada, seizing 668 bikes in a fresh enforcement drive.
The week-long operation, which began last Monday, targeted black spots and restricted routes across the state. Areas raided included Ishaga, Iju-Ishaga, Ijegun Roundabout, Iyana-Iba, Iyana-Ishasi, Igbo-Elerin, Iyana-School, Volkswagen Bus Stop (Lagos-Badagry Expressway), and Kola Bus Stop (Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway).
Speaking on Sunday, Taskforce Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele said the crackdown was part of efforts to enforce the state government’s ban on okada in restricted areas.
“Despite repeated warnings, some operators continue to defy the law, creating safety risks and aiding criminal activities. Okada riders are often linked to robberies, pickpocketing, and other crimes, especially at night,” Akerele noted.
He revealed that officials faced resistance at Kola Bus Stop, where hoodlums and riders tried to obstruct the team. However, they were dispersed with minimal force. Seven suspects were arrested, and normalcy was quickly restored.
Akerele assured that all seized motorcycles would be processed through the courts and crushed in line with state laws. He also warned defiant riders to steer clear of restricted routes, stressing that the government remains committed to protecting lives and property.
