State emergency management authorities urge heightened vigilance, proper electrical management, and strict preventive protocols as data reveals thousands of distress calls and billions in property damage

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern safety advisory to residents following the release of the latest institutional performance data by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, which recorded 1,324 emergency incidents between January and September.

According to the third-quarter activity report presented by the agency's leadership, fire outbreaks accounted for the overwhelming majority of the distress calls, totaling 1,135 incidents across various residential and commercial zones of the metropolis.

The comprehensive operational log further indicated that emergency responders attended to 79 rescue calls, 100 salvage operations, nine building collapse incidents, and a gas-related explosion during the active period.

While detailing the human and economic impact of the operations, the Controller-General of the Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Abimbola Adeseye, noted that rapid intervention teams successfully rescued 210 victims alive, though 65 fatalities were regrettably recorded.

Financial evaluations from the period showed that emergency personnel successfully protected and saved properties valued at an estimated 79.44 billion naira, while cumulative losses resulting from fire and structural disasters stood at approximately 13.24 billion naira.

With the onset of the dry season approaching, public safety officials cautioned the populace against hazardous practices, urging citizens to avoid indiscriminate waste burning, monitor electrical load capacities, and ensure that emergency exit routes in public and private buildings remain completely unobstructed.
