Ministry of Transportation outlines phased lane closures starting Friday to facilitate weekend asphalt repairs while deploying LASTMA officers for traffic management

The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion plan on the Independence Bridge, located on Lagos Island, to enable the Federal Ministry of Works to carry out urgent structural and asphalt rehabilitation works.

According to a traffic advisory issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation and signed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the scheduled maintenance work is set to commence on Friday night, October 16, 2026.

The repair schedule will run continuously through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, 2026, operating during both day and night hours to ensure swift completion before the start of the regular workweek.

Under the state government's traffic management arrangement, repair operations will involve partial, phased closures of sections along both inbound and outbound lanes of the bridge, ensuring that at least one dedicated lane remains open for transit at all times.

The Ministry of Transportation confirmed that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed strategically around the bridge corridors to regulate vehicular flow, prevent gridlock, and guide motorists along designated detour routes.

State authorities have urged commuters traveling through Lagos Island and adjoining routes to plan their movements in advance, allow additional travel time, and strictly adhere to directives from traffic management personnel throughout the maintenance period.
