The Lagos State Government has signed a partnership agreement with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to establish a specialised railway training centre aimed at building local capacity in rail transport operations and maintenance.

The facility will provide technical training for engineers, technicians, and other professionals in areas such as signalling, rolling stock maintenance, track management, and safety protocols. Officials described the initiative as a critical step towards developing indigenous expertise for the state’s expanding rail network and reducing dependence on foreign technical support.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the centre will contribute to job creation and support the long-term sustainability of Lagos’ mass transit system. CCECC, which has been involved in several major rail projects in Nigeria, expressed commitment to knowledge transfer and skills development.

The partnership is expected to accelerate human capital development in the rail sector as the state continues to invest in modern transportation infrastructure. Training is anticipated to commence once the facility is completed, with plans to extend opportunities to students and professionals from other parts of the country.

Stakeholders welcomed the development as a positive move towards building a self-reliant railway industry.
