The Lagos State Government has reiterated its determination to establish the state as Africa’s climate capital, transforming its environmental and coastal challenges into drivers of economic growth, innovation, and sustainability.

This reaffirmation comes ahead of the 11th Lagos State International Climate Change Summit — a premier event that underscores Lagos’ leadership in climate action and urban resilience across the continent.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Eko Atlantic Corporate Office, Victoria Island, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, stated that Lagos is investing strategically in coastal defences, flood management, renewable energy, and circular economy initiatives that could serve as models for other African cities.

“Through the Lagos International Climate Change Summit, we are sending a clear message to the world: Africa is not waiting to be rescued. We are ready to lead,” Wahab declared.

He described Lagos as a living example of resilience and innovation, noting that the government remains dedicated to building a future where the economy, environment, and people coexist sustainably.

Wahab emphasized that Lagos, as one of the world’s most vibrant coastal megacities, has been leading efforts in climate adaptation and environmental innovation. He cited the creation of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) as one of the tangible achievements from earlier summits, designed to enhance urban greening and promote ecological balance.

He added that this year’s summit will also highlight the Lagos Climate Resilience Policy — a groundbreaking document outlining comprehensive strategies for both climate mitigation and adaptation.

“Lagos remains the only state in Nigeria with an official Climate Policy,” Wahab noted.

According to him, the 2025 Summit will move beyond discussions, serving as a strategic platform for developing actionable and bankable climate projects. It will bring together sub-national governments, investors, scientists, innovators, development partners, and other stakeholders to design practical climate solutions.

Over 1,200 delegates, including international CEOs, financiers, youth innovators, researchers, and heads of global agencies, are expected to participate under the theme “Financing the Future of Resilience in Africa.”

Wahab also expressed appreciation to the summit’s partners, particularly Eko Atlantic, for promoting sustainable urban development, and to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for its leadership in advancing the blue economy and maritime safety.

In his remarks, the Director-General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, represented by Deputy Director Mr. Tuti Hebron, praised the Lagos State Government’s proactive environmental policies. He noted that NIMASA has developed a National Policy on Blue Economy to provide a strong legal and operational framework for sustainable marine resource management.

He further encouraged other states to emulate Lagos by investing in marine innovation and coastal tourism, citing the recent E1 Electric Boat Race as a symbol of Lagos’ rising influence in sustainable maritime development.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
