LAGOS SET TO BEGIN TURNBULL-PARKVIEW JUNCTION UPGRADE SEPTEMBER 14

The Lagos State Government is set to commence improvement works at the Turnbull-Parkview intersections along Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, on September 14, 2026, as part of efforts to ease persistent traffic congestion around the corridor.

The planned intervention was announced by the state Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during a stakeholders’ engagement held at Banana Island Estate, Ikoyi. He appealed to residents, estate associations and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government and contractors to ensure the project is delivered within the scheduled timeframe.

According to Osiyemi, the junction improvement scheme is expected to run for approximately six months and is specifically designed to address the traffic bottlenecks that frequently occur around the Turnbull-Parkview axis. The government believes the upgrade will improve the efficiency of the two intersections and create a smoother flow of vehicles along the affected roads.

The commissioner said the state was also taking steps to ensure that construction does not unnecessarily disrupt existing public utilities. He explained that the Ministry of Transportation would coordinate with relevant agencies and service providers to protect infrastructure such as electricity lines, water systems and fibre-optic cables during the construction period.

Traffic management will also form a major part of the construction strategy. Osiyemi assured road users that a detailed traffic management plan would be implemented to limit congestion and inconvenience while the works are ongoing. He said major construction activities would largely be scheduled for off-peak periods, particularly during the morning and evening, in order to reduce the pressure on traffic around the area.

The government also disclosed that provisions had been made for compensation where the project’s right-of-way affects private properties. Osiyemi said concerns raised by residents and other stakeholders at the engagement would be examined before the contractor fully moves to site.

The Director of Transport Engineering at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolaji Bada, explained that the two intersections serve as important connections to major roads in the area. He noted that their current configuration contributes to recurring congestion, particularly during peak periods, making the proposed improvement necessary to enhance traffic movement.

Residents’ representatives welcomed the planned intervention but stressed the importance of keeping communities informed throughout the construction process. The Chairman of Parkview Estate, Ronke Shokefun, raised concerns about congestion in the area and urged the ministry to maintain regular communication with residents as the project progresses.

The Chairman of Banana Island Estate, Abidemi Shonaiki, also expressed support for the project and commended the state government for making provision for the intervention. He said improved traffic movement would benefit residents and other road users within the Ikoyi corridor, while encouraging stakeholders to cooperate with the government during execution.

In addition to representatives of the affected communities, the engagement was attended by the project contractor, Infrapoint Concept Limited, as well as representatives of Julius Berger, telecommunications companies, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Lagos State Water Corporation and other relevant government agencies.

With the commencement date now fixed for September 14, authorities are expected to focus on implementing the traffic diversion and construction arrangements needed to keep movement within the area as orderly as possible throughout the six-month project period.
