LAGOS SEEKS MORE SUPPORT FOR WIDOWS

The Lagos State Government has called for stronger legal protection and economic support for widows to help them overcome discrimination, poverty and other challenges associated with widowhood.

The call was made as stakeholders continued discussions on improving the welfare and rights of widows in the state. The government stressed the need for policies that would protect widows from exploitation while helping them achieve greater economic independence.

Officials said legal protection remains important, particularly in cases involving inheritance, property rights and harmful traditional practices. They also highlighted the need to ensure that widows are aware of the laws and support services available to them.

The government noted that economic empowerment should form an important part of efforts to improve the lives of widows. Access to skills training, financial assistance and opportunities to earn sustainable incomes could help affected women support themselves and their families.

The call is in line with wider concerns across Nigeria over the difficulties faced by widows, including social exclusion, loss of property and limited access to economic opportunities.

Lagos said stronger collaboration among government agencies, community leaders, civil society organisations and other stakeholders would be necessary to ensure that widows receive adequate legal and economic support.

The initiative is expected to contribute to efforts to promote dignity, inclusion and greater financial security for widows across the state.
