The Lagos State Government is seeking stronger financing mechanisms to improve its ability to respond to flooding and other climate-related disasters affecting communities across the state.

The call followed a strategic engagement between the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations University-Institute for Environment and Human Security.

The meeting focused on strengthening disaster resilience and financing recovery, with participants examining existing gaps and possible approaches to disaster-risk financing.

The Permanent Secretary of the Office of SDGs said Lagos was committed to adopting sustainable and data-driven approaches to managing climate and disaster risks.

She noted that improved financing would be important in protecting livelihoods, supporting affected communities and accelerating recovery after climate-related emergencies.

The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency also stressed the importance of collaboration in preparing for disasters and responding effectively when they occur.

The discussions involved representatives of the Ministries of Environment and Finance, LASEMA, the Lagos State Resilience Office and the Office of Drainage Services.

The state government said stronger cooperation among government agencies, development partners, insurers, communities and other stakeholders would be necessary to build long-term resilience against flooding and other climate-related risks.
