LAGOS REVIEWS SOMOLU HOSPITAL OPERATIONS AMID SPACE CONSTRAINTS

The Lagos State Health Service Commission has reviewed operations at the General Hospital, Somolu, as part of efforts to assess healthcare delivery and identify infrastructure and service gaps at the facility.

The assessment was carried out by the Commissioner IV on the Health Service Commission Board, Mrs Ololade Fadipe, during a routine supervisory visit to the hospital.

Fadipe expressed satisfaction with the hospital’s compliance with operational and sanitation standards, while acknowledging the pressure faced by staff because of limited space at the facility.

She commended the medical team for maintaining service delivery despite the constraints and urged them to sustain their commitment to providing quality healthcare to residents.

The inspection also included the site of the ongoing new Somolu hospital project, which is expected to address the limitations of the existing facility and growing demand for healthcare services in the area.

The Lagos State Government is constructing a new seven-floor, 180-bed multi-specialist hospital in Somolu. The facility is planned as a Head and Neck Super-Specialty Centre, with services including Ear, Nose and Throat, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Plastic Surgery and Maxillofacial Surgery, alongside core medical specialties.

The existing Somolu General Hospital currently has about 60 beds, while the wider catchment population is estimated to be between five and 10 million people, highlighting the need for expanded healthcare capacity.

The Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, Dr Adesina Ayodele, commended the state government for its continued investment in healthcare infrastructure.

He said the hospital management and staff would continue working within their capacity to provide quality services to residents.

The Health Service Commission said its supervisory visits were also aimed at monitoring clinical standards, patient care, sanitation, staff welfare and overall hospital performance.

The development reflects Lagos State’s broader efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to specialised medical services as demand for healthcare continues to grow.
