LAGOS RALLIES RESIDENTS AGAINST REFUSE DUMPING, ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

The Lagos State Government has launched a fresh campaign urging residents to stop indiscriminate refuse dumping as the state battles flooding and environmental pollution during the rainy season.

At a stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday, Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, warned that illegal dumping of waste in canals, roadsides, and under bridges remains a major cause of flooding and disease outbreaks.

“Environmental sanitation is everybody’s responsibility. We must all work together to keep Lagos clean and safe,” Wahab emphasised.

The government announced stricter enforcement measures, including heavier fines and possible prosecution of offenders, while promising improved waste collection services across all local government areas.

Residents were advised to utilise approved waste collection points and private sector operators rather than dumping refuse indiscriminately.

The campaign also targets markets, motor parks, and high-density residential areas with sensitisation programmes aimed at changing negative attitudes towards waste management.

Officials believe sustained public cooperation will significantly reduce environmental hazards and improve the overall livability of Lagos State.
