LAGOS PUSHES GREEN PACKAGING, SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS IN E-COMMERCE
The Lagos State Government has launched a major initiative to promote green packaging and sustainable logistics practices within the e-commerce sector as part of its broader environmental sustainability agenda.
The programme, unveiled by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mrs. Bolaji Adefuye, encourages online retailers and logistics companies to adopt biodegradable packaging materials and eco-friendly delivery methods, including electric vehicles and optimised routing systems. “E-commerce is growing rapidly. We must ensure it does not come at the expense of our environment,” Adefuye said.
The state has partnered with major e-commerce players and industry associations to provide incentives for businesses that meet sustainability benchmarks. Training workshops and awareness campaigns have also been rolled out to support the transition.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting its potential to reduce plastic waste and carbon emissions while positioning Lagos as a leader in green commerce in Africa.
The initiative aligns with Lagos’ commitment to achieving net-zero targets and promoting circular economy principles in the digital economy.
