The government of Lagos has announced that it prosecuted 459 individuals for begging-related offences while also rescuing 1,315 vulnerable persons in ongoing social welfare and enforcement operations.

Officials said the exercise is part of efforts to restore order in public spaces while also providing protection and support for persons identified as vulnerable, including children and individuals in distress.

According to authorities, those rescued were taken to designated care facilities for profiling, rehabilitation, and possible family reunification where applicable.

The state government noted that enforcement actions are usually accompanied by social intervention measures aimed at addressing the root causes of street begging and vulnerability.

Officials added that the operations are being carried out in collaboration with relevant agencies responsible for social welfare, child protection, and public safety.

Human rights observers continue to emphasise the need for balancing enforcement with rehabilitation to ensure that vulnerable individuals receive adequate care and long-term support.

The government said it remains committed to maintaining public order while strengthening social protection systems across the state.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
