The Lagos State Government has proposed the establishment of a climate finance clinic to attract investment and accelerate the state’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Friday during a stakeholders’ roundtable on climate action and sustainable development. The clinic is expected to serve as a one-stop centre for businesses, investors, and development partners seeking opportunities in green projects, renewable energy, and climate resilience initiatives.

Wahab explained that the clinic will provide advisory services, facilitate access to climate funds, and connect project developers with potential financiers. “Lagos is committed to leading Nigeria’s climate response. This clinic will help unlock billions of dollars in investment needed to address climate challenges and create green jobs,” he stated.

The proposal aligns with the state’s broader climate change policy and its ambition to become a net-zero city by 2050. It will focus on sectors such as sustainable transportation, waste management, renewable energy, and climate-smart agriculture.

Participants at the roundtable, including representatives from the private sector, development agencies, and civil society, welcomed the idea and pledged support for its successful implementation. They emphasised the importance of a transparent and investor-friendly framework to attract meaningful capital.

The Lagos State Government has already begun preliminary engagements with international climate finance institutions and is expected to formalise partnerships in the coming months. The clinic is projected to be operational before the end of the year.

Environmental experts believe the initiative could serve as a model for other states in Nigeria and across Africa, helping to bridge the huge climate finance gap on the continent. As Lagos continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable urban development, the proposed climate finance clinic is expected to play a pivotal role in mobilising resources for green growth.
