The Lagos State Government has directed residents living in low-lying and flood-prone communities to temporarily relocate to higher ground following a fresh seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the directive was necessary to prevent loss of lives and property as rising river levels increase the risk of flooding.

Areas identified as vulnerable include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty and Jetty Terminal B. Communities downstream of Isheri Olofin, including Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto and parts of Agboyi, have also been advised to remain on high alert between September 19 and 25.

Wahab urged residents near rivers, lagoons, wetlands and drainage channels to monitor official flood forecasts and prepare for temporary relocation when necessary.

He also called on local governments, emergency agencies and community leaders to activate early-warning and response measures.

The NiHSA advisory covers Lagos and 14 other states and warns that rising water levels could affect communities, schools, healthcare facilities, markets, farms and places of worship.

The state government said it would continue monitoring rainfall patterns and river levels while sustaining drainage maintenance and other flood mitigation measures.
