LAGOS MOVES TO STOP USE OF UNSAFE PEPPER-GRINDING MACHINES
The Lagos State Government has begun moves to curb the use of unsafe pepper-grinding machines as part of efforts to protect residents from potential health risks associated with unhygienic food processing practices. The state authorities said the action was necessary to ensure that food prepared and processed for public consumption meets required safety standards.
The government’s concerns are centred on the condition and operation of some pepper-grinding machines used by traders and food vendors across the state. Machines that are poorly maintained or operated in unhygienic surroundings can expose food products to contaminants, making it necessary for operators to comply with sanitation and safety requirements.
Officials are expected to intensify inspections of grinding points and other food-processing locations as part of the enforcement exercise. Operators whose machines or facilities fail to meet the required standards could face sanctions, while those operating legally are expected to maintain proper hygiene and ensure that their equipment is suitable for food processing.
The government also urged residents and food vendors to take food safety seriously by patronising clean and properly regulated grinding facilities. Consumers were encouraged to report practices that could put public health at risk, particularly where food is processed with equipment that is visibly dirty, damaged or poorly maintained.
The clampdown forms part of Lagos State’s wider efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation and protect residents from preventable health hazards. Authorities said maintaining proper standards in food processing is important to reducing contamination and ensuring that residents have access to safer food products.
