LAGOS MOVES TO STOP ENCROACHMENT ON SETBACKS, PUBLIC SPACES

The Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to tackle the illegal occupation and conversion of building setbacks and other public spaces across the state.

The government said the move was necessary to protect areas reserved for public use and prevent unauthorised development from affecting the state’s urban planning and environmental standards.

Officials warned property owners, developers and businesses against converting setbacks, road corridors, drainage areas and other designated public spaces for private use.

The state said such encroachments can obstruct access routes, worsen drainage challenges and contribute to traffic and environmental problems in densely populated areas.

Authorities also stressed the need for property owners and developers to comply with approved building plans and planning regulations before undertaking construction or modifying existing structures.

The government said enforcement teams would continue monitoring communities and taking action against developments that violate planning laws.

Residents were encouraged to report suspected cases of illegal development and encroachment to the relevant state authorities.

The Lagos State Government maintained that protecting public spaces is important to the state’s long-term urban development, particularly as the population continues to grow and pressure on available land increases.

The enforcement drive is part of broader efforts to improve physical planning, protect infrastructure and ensure that development across Lagos follows approved regulations and serves the wider public interest.
