LAGOS LCDA PLANS ₦50,000 FINE, JAIL FOR RESIDENTS WITHOUT WASTE BINS
A Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State has proposed stricter environmental sanitation measures, including a ₦50,000 fine or possible imprisonment for residents who fail to provide waste bins at their homes or business premises.
The proposed measure is aimed at improving waste disposal practices, promoting cleaner communities, and reducing indiscriminate dumping of refuse across the council area.
According to council officials, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen environmental hygiene, prevent flooding caused by blocked drainage systems, and improve public health.
Authorities said residents and business owners are expected to maintain appropriate waste bins and ensure proper disposal of refuse through approved waste management channels.
The council noted that environmental sanitation remains a shared responsibility, urging residents to comply with existing regulations designed to create a cleaner and healthier environment.
Officials also disclosed that public awareness campaigns would accompany the enforcement of the proposed policy to educate residents on proper waste management practices.
Environmental experts welcomed efforts to improve sanitation but stressed the need for adequate public sensitisation, accessible waste collection services, and fair enforcement of environmental regulations.
Residents have expressed mixed reactions to the proposal, with some supporting stricter measures to keep communities clean, while others called for improved waste management infrastructure before penalties are enforced.
The LCDA reiterated its commitment to maintaining environmental standards and ensuring compliance with sanitation laws in the interest of public health and sustainable urban development.
If implemented, the policy is expected to strengthen waste management compliance and encourage greater environmental responsibility among residents.
