LAGOS KICKS OFF MAJOR DRAINAGE PROJECT TO TACKLE FLOODING ON LAGOS ISLAND
The Lagos State Government has launched a new drainage project aimed at reducing flooding in Lagos Island’s flood-prone areas.
The initiative was unveiled during the groundbreaking ceremony of an ultra-modern shopping complex at the former Pelewura Iron Rod Market in Adeniji Adele.
According to the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the project is being carried out in partnership with the Lagos Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and will be completed within 12 months.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, explained that the regeneration of the Pelewura market area is part of the state’s long-term master plan for Lagos Island.
“Although Lagos Island is not technically below sea level, its closeness to the waterline makes proper drainage essential. We are creating natural water flow channels by removing structures that block drainage,” Olumide said.
He added that the goal is to restore the island’s old efficient drainage system. “Growing up, we could play with paper boats in the drains because water flowed freely. That is the vision we are working to restore,” he noted.
Also present at the event, Special Adviser to the Governor on Urban Development, Olajide Abiodun, described the shopping mall project as a landmark that will breathe new life into the Island.
The Chairman of Lagos Island LCDA, Folawiyo Alade, assured residents that the project would be completed within the scheduled time, emphasizing the government’s commitment to sustainable urban development.
