Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned a newly constructed 248-bed students’ hostel at the Lagos State College of Nursing, Igando, as part of efforts to improve the welfare and learning environment of nursing students in the state. The facility is expected to provide accommodation for more than 248 students and support the state’s efforts to strengthen nursing education and healthcare manpower development.

Speaking during the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu described the project as an investment in human capital and the future of healthcare delivery in Lagos. He stressed the important role nurses play in the healthcare system, noting that their knowledge, dedication and professional commitment remain critical to meeting the healthcare needs of the state’s growing population.

The governor also disclosed that his administration was pursuing approval for the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences in Lagos. According to him, the proposed institution would increase the state’s capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals, while helping to address the shortage of skilled manpower and reduce pressure on existing healthcare facilities.

Sanwo-Olu urged the management and students of LASCON to take proper ownership of the new hostel and ensure that the facility is well maintained. He said responsible use of public infrastructure would encourage the government to continue investing in additional facilities and improving the conditions under which students receive professional training.

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described the commissioning as another step in the state’s efforts to improve education and healthcare development. He commended the LASCON management, faculty and project team for their contributions to the completion of the facility, saying the hostel would provide a more comfortable environment for students preparing to join the nursing profession.
