The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of Ajah Market following multiple environmental infractions discovered during a recent inspection exercise.

The announcement was made on Monday, October 6, by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Wahab stated that the closure was part of the state’s ongoing efforts to enforce environmental laws and promote public hygiene across markets in Lagos.

“Ajah Market has been sealed due to environmental infractions. We will continue to ensure compliance with sanitation standards to protect the health of residents,” Wahab said.

The development comes just days after Itedo Market, located in the Lekki axis, was similarly shut down for poor sanitation practices and non-compliance with waste management regulations.

According to the Ministry, the enforcement drive aims to ensure that all markets in Lagos operate in a clean and safe environment, as part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s “Cleaner Lagos Initiative.”

The Commissioner also urged market leaders to prioritise cleanliness, warning that any facility found violating environmental standards will face immediate closure.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
