LAGOS GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWEN COLLEGE OVER ILLEGAL WASTE DISPOSAL
The Lagos State Government has sealed Dowen College, Lekki Phase 1, over alleged violations of the state’s waste management laws.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the closure in a post on X, revealing that the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) and the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) carried out the enforcement.
According to Wahab, the action followed an investigation that began after officials apprehended a man disposing of waste improperly. In a video shared by the commissioner, the suspect confessed to working for Dowen College, which led authorities to trace the offence back to the school.
“This waste was traced to Dowen College in Lekki Phase 1. Such disregard for environmental laws is unacceptable,” Wahab stated.
He added that the Corps Marshal of LAGESC was directed to seal the school, stressing that the government will not hesitate to sanction any organisation or institution found breaching waste management rules.
“Lagos must remain clean, safe, and healthy for all residents, and enforcement will continue without compromise,” Wahab warned.
As of the time of reporting, Dowen College has not released an official statement regarding the closure.
