LAGOS FLOOD: RESIDENTS FAULT AIR FORCE FENCE, BLOCKED DRAINAGE
Residents in parts of Lagos have blamed a perimeter fence belonging to the Nigerian Air Force and blocked drainage channels for worsening flooding following heavy rainfall.
According to community members, the fence has restricted the natural flow of stormwater, while clogged drainage systems have prevented floodwaters from draining effectively, leading to widespread inundation.
The flooding reportedly affected homes, businesses, and roads, disrupting daily activities and forcing some residents to relocate temporarily to safer areas.
Residents called on the relevant authorities to investigate the situation, improve drainage infrastructure, and address any structural issues contributing to the persistent flooding.
Environmental experts noted that inadequate drainage maintenance, rapid urban development, and heavy rainfall are among the factors that can increase the risk of flooding in densely populated areas.
They also stressed the importance of regular desilting of drainage channels and proper urban planning to reduce the impact of seasonal floods.
Emergency management agencies urged residents to avoid flooded roads, remain alert, and follow safety advisories during periods of heavy rainfall.
Authorities are expected to assess the affected areas and determine appropriate measures to improve water flow and prevent future flooding.
Community leaders have appealed for a collaborative approach involving government agencies, residents, and other stakeholders to strengthen flood mitigation efforts.
The incident highlights the recurring flood challenges in Lagos and reinforces the need for sustainable infrastructure development and effective environmental management.
