The Lagos State Government has expanded its annual maternal and child nutrition programme to reach 5,000 pregnant women across the state’s six health districts.

The intervention, under the 2026 Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme, was launched in Health District I at Abekoko, Agege, on Monday. The number of beneficiaries is more than double the figure reached in 2025.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Afolabi Tajudeen, said the programme was designed to provide nutritional support while connecting vulnerable families with healthcare services.

He said the state would distribute 5,000 nutritional food packs to pregnant women and use the programme to gather feedback from residents on healthcare and other public services.

The Permanent Secretary of the office, Sholabomi Shasore, said feedback from residents and healthcare workers would help the government identify gaps and improve service delivery.

The programme also provides access to services including antenatal care, routine immunisation, family planning, vitamin A supplementation, malnutrition screening, birth registration, HIV screening and tuberculosis services.

Residents were also encouraged to enrol in Ilera Eko, the state’s health insurance scheme, while parents and caregivers were urged to ensure children receive routine immunisation.

The food packs distributed to beneficiaries included items such as rice, beans, garri, milk, eggs, oats and Semovita.
