LAGOS ESTABLISHES INDEPENDENT ELECTRICITY SYSTEM OPERATOR

The Lagos State Government has announced the establishment of an independent electricity system operator as part of efforts to improve power supply and strengthen the state’s energy infrastructure.

Officials said the new body will oversee coordination, planning, and management of electricity distribution within the state, ensuring a more reliable and efficient power system.

According to the government, the initiative follows ongoing reforms in the power sector aimed at decentralising electricity management and improving service delivery.

It noted that the system operator will work to enhance grid stability, reduce outages, and support increased investment in the electricity value chain.

Stakeholders in the energy sector say the move could help Lagos achieve greater autonomy in electricity management and attract private sector participation in power generation and distribution.

Experts also believe the initiative may improve accountability and accelerate infrastructure upgrades in the state’s energy system.

The government emphasised that the reform aligns with its broader strategy to expand access to stable and affordable electricity for residents and businesses.
