Lagos State has declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in honour of this year’s Isese Day—a celebration of Yoruba traditional religion and heritage.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement on Monday, noting that the holiday gives Lagosians a chance to reconnect with their cultural roots while promoting unity in the state’s diverse society.

“Isese Day is a time to reflect on our rich heritage and values as Lagosians. This work-free day provides an opportunity for our people to connect with their roots, celebrate our traditions, and strengthen unity in our diverse state,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Isese Day, now a major cultural event in Nigeria—especially in the Southwest—features colourful festivals, visits to sacred sites, communal prayers, and vibrant cultural performances. In Lagos, the celebration has become an annual tradition that continues to draw recognition and participation from traditional rulers, cultural advocates, and ordinary citizens alike.

The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, praised the governor’s decision, describing it as a vital step in preserving Yoruba spirituality and identity.

The Lagos State Government also urged residents to mark the day peacefully, respecting other religions and fostering harmony across cultural lines.

By officially observing Isese Day, Lagos joins other Yoruba states like Osun and Oyo, further strengthening its role as a hub of Yoruba culture and tradition.

So, come Wednesday, Lagosians will not just enjoy a day off work—they’ll also get the chance to celebrate their heritage in grand style.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
