LAGOS CHIEF JUDGE COMMISSIONS ELECTION TRIBUNALS AHEAD OF LG POLLS
In preparation for today’s Local Government elections in Lagos State, the Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba, has formally inaugurated two Local Government Election Appeal Tribunals.
The tribunals—each comprising four chief magistrates and chaired by a retired High Court judge—will sit concurrently in Lagos Island and Ikeja.
Justice Taofikat Oyinkan-Abdullahi (retd.) will preside over the Lagos Island tribunal, with Magistrates Michael Olubi, Olaitan Ajayi, Salamah Matepo, and Hotepo Lazarus serving alongside her. The Ikeja tribunal will be chaired by Justice Sherifah Solebo (retd.), alongside Magistrates Davies Rasak, Oluwatosin Fowowe-Erusiafe, Adepeju Odusanya, and Lynda Balogun.
During the inauguration held at the Ikeja High Court Conference Room on Friday, Justice Alogba urged tribunal members to approach their responsibilities with integrity, impartiality, and strict adherence to the law.
He highlighted the importance of complying with the timeline established in the 2016 Amendment of the Lagos State Local Government Law, which allows 21 days for filing petitions following the announcement of election results and 45 days for tribunal proceedings to be concluded.
“Any action taken outside the legally prescribed timeframe is null and void,” he warned.
The Chief Judge added, “You must operate strictly within the bounds of the law. Your appointments reflect confidence in your character, experience, and sound judgment. Uphold justice without fear or favour, and remain resistant to any form of pressure or bias.”
He further noted that the quality of their work would reflect on the judiciary’s reputation.
“The Lagos State judiciary is known for its integrity and leadership within the country’s legal system. I urge you to deliver your best, ensuring your decisions earn public trust,” he said. “Of course, not everyone will agree with the outcomes—there will always be winners and losers,” he added.
