LAGOS BOAT OPERATORS SEEK JETTIES, SUBSIDIES, FUNDING TO BOOST WATER TRANSPORT

Boat operators in Lagos State have called on the government to provide better jetties, financial support and operational subsidies to improve water transportation and make it more accessible to residents.

The operators said inadequate infrastructure and the high cost of running water transport businesses remain major challenges affecting the sector.

They explained that many existing jetties require improvements to ensure safer boarding and disembarkation, while additional facilities are needed to serve communities that depend on waterways for daily transportation.

The operators also expressed concern over the rising cost of fuel, boat maintenance, spare parts and other operational expenses, noting that these challenges make it difficult to maintain affordable fares for passengers.

They argued that government subsidies and access to funding would help operators improve their services, acquire better boats and invest in safety equipment.

Lagos has an extensive network of waterways, making water transportation an important alternative to road travel, particularly as residents continue to deal with heavy traffic congestion across the state.

However, the sector still faces challenges involving infrastructure, safety standards, regulation and limited access to affordable financing.

The operators maintained that increased government investment would encourage more people to use water transport, reduce pressure on roads and create additional employment opportunities.

They urged the Lagos State Government to strengthen its partnership with private operators and introduce policies that would support sustainable growth in the sector.

Improving water transportation, they added, could help Lagos develop a more efficient transport system while providing residents with additional travel options.
