Lagos State has officially thrown its hat into the ring to host the 2026 edition of the National Youth Games (NYG), showcasing its determination to become the next home of Nigeria’s premier youth sports festival.

The bid was formally submitted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who signed the expression of interest documents — a move that underscores the state’s deep commitment to nurturing sports and empowering young talents.

In a statement released by the Lagos delegation, the state government highlighted why Lagos stands out as the ideal choice.

“With Lagos being Nigeria’s foremost economic and cultural epicentre, the State is committed to fostering sporting excellence and nurturing youth talent across the nation,” the statement read.

The team also pointed to Lagos’ impressive history of hosting high-profile sporting events. From the bustling Teslim Balogun Stadium to Mobolaji Johnson Arena and Rowe Park, Lagos boasts top-tier facilities, a vibrant hospitality industry, and a solid transport network — all ready to ensure a smooth and unforgettable experience for athletes, officials, and fans.

The Lagos bid team included the Director of Sports, Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih; Director of School Sports, Dr. (Mrs.) Oluyomi Oluwasanmi; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Sports, Mr. Dare Orimoloye.

Why the Games Matter

The National Youth Games isn’t just another sports event — it’s a critical platform designed to spot and groom the next generation of Nigerian sports stars. Over the years, the NYG has helped uncover talents who’ve gone on to shine in both national and international competitions.

At the last edition held in Delta State in 2024, the host state emerged champions, bagging an impressive total of 111 medals (46 gold, 31 silver, and 34 bronze) at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba.

Should Lagos secure the hosting rights for 2026, the city promises to elevate the event’s standard even higher — delivering not just a tournament, but a celebration of youthful energy, talent discovery, and national unity.
