LAGOS BEGINS SIX-MONTH PLAN TO EASE TRAFFIC AROUND IKOYI

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to reconstruct two major intersections in the Ikoyi axis as part of efforts to tackle persistent traffic congestion in the area. The projects, which will be located around Parkview and Banana Island, are expected to take six months to complete and are aimed at improving traffic movement within the busy residential and business corridor.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the plan during a stakeholders’ engagement on the proposed projects. He said the two intersections had been identified as an immediate priority in the government’s efforts to address traffic challenges around Ikoyi. According to him, although some administrative processes are still being completed, construction is expected to commence shortly, with the government determined to deliver the projects within the stipulated six-month period or possibly earlier.

Osiyemi explained that the state government was engaging residents, contractors, traffic management officials, utility providers and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that construction activities do not cause unnecessary disruption to movement. He stressed that the government intends for the work to proceed continuously once construction begins, with the goal of completing the intervention on or before the six-month deadline.

The Chairman of the Banana Island Association, Abidemi Shuneyin, said the project followed months of discussions between residents and the Lagos State Government over worsening traffic conditions. He noted that congestion had become a recurring problem around Banana Island, Parkview, Gerrard Road and Banana Road, prompting residents to seek government intervention. Shuneyin expressed appreciation to the state government for responding to the concerns and supporting measures designed to improve movement within the Ikoyi area.

The reconstruction is expected to improve traffic flow and make movement easier for residents, workers and other road users within the affected areas. The government’s engagement with stakeholders is also intended to minimise the impact of the construction on daily activities while ensuring that the projects are delivered efficiently. If completed within the proposed timeline, the interventions could provide significant relief for motorists who regularly experience delays around the Ikoyi corridor.
