LAGOS ASSEMBLY YIELDS TO PRESSURE, SUSPENDS MAKOKO DEMOLITIONS
The Lagos State House of Assembly has halted the planned demolition of houses and structures in the Makoko area.
Majority Leader Noheem Adams announced the suspension in a statement on Tuesday.
The decision follows widespread protests by residents and activists opposing the demolition.
Adams, speaking on behalf of his colleagues, explained that the directive came after a meeting between lawmakers and representatives of the community. He added that the assembly will collaborate with relevant ministries and agencies to review matters related to the demolition exercise.
He also assured that all stakeholders would be properly consulted throughout the process.
In the statement, Adams said, “On behalf of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, and the honourable members of this House, we are taking this matter seriously. All ongoing demolitions should be stopped.”
