The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has hit back at former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, for suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is plotting to entrench himself in power under a so-called “life presidency.”

In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s Publicity Secretary, Mogaji Seye Oladejo, described El-Rufai’s remarks as mischievous, reckless, and a direct affront to Tinubu’s lifelong commitment to democracy.

Oladejo recalled Tinubu’s courageous role during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle of the 1990s, particularly his active participation in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). According to him, Tinubu risked his life and freedom to oppose military dictatorship and to champion the return of civilian rule.

He added that it was both “laughable and shameful” for El-Rufai to cast doubt on Tinubu’s democratic credentials, especially given the President’s long-standing rejection of tenure elongation and firm defence of constitutional order.

The Lagos APC maintained that Tinubu’s loyalty to the Constitution is unquestionable, stressing that Nigeria’s democracy remains safeguarded by constitutional term limits, strong institutions, and checks and balances.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
