LAGOS AG CALLS FOR STRONGER JUSTICE SYSTEM
Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, has described an effective justice system as an important part of the state’s economic infrastructure.
Pedro made the remarks at the 2026/2027 Legal Year Summit in Lagos, where he said efficient justice was necessary to protect property rights, enforce contracts, resolve disputes and build confidence among citizens, businesses and investors.
He said Lagos’ economic ambitions required a justice system capable of responding efficiently to the needs of a growing commercial environment.
The Attorney-General identified judicial infrastructure, human capital development and technology as areas requiring continued investment.
He also highlighted electronic filing, digital case management and virtual proceedings as tools that could help reduce delays and improve access to justice.
Pedro urged the legal profession to develop expertise in emerging areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, intellectual property and digital transactions.
He further called for greater use of mediation, arbitration and other alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to provide faster and more cost-effective ways of settling disputes.
The Attorney-General said justice-sector reform should involve the Judiciary, Executive, Legislature, legal profession, business community and other stakeholders.
He urged participants to translate discussions at the summit into practical reforms that would strengthen the justice system and support Lagos’ economic development.
