The Nasarawa State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has launched electronic registration for prospective members across all 13 local government areas.

Alexander Ombugu, the state chairman, disclosed this to journalists on Sunday after a meeting with the party’s State Executive Council members, local government and ward chairmen, and political aspirants at the LP secretariat in Lafia, the state capital.

The initiative follows guidelines from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

Ombugu explained that while the party began registration shortly after the 2023 elections, it did not previously capture all information now required by INEC, such as National Identification Numbers (NIN) and photographs of members.

He expressed confidence that the party would register at least 50,000 members before the e-registration portal closes.

“INEC now requires that we include NINs and photographs, so the Labour Party decided to resume registration. We are calling on our members to participate. A large number of people have already visited the secretariat,” he said.

Ombugu also addressed rumours about the formation of a caretaker committee in the state, describing them as false. He stressed that the party’s constitution makes no provision for such a committee and warned that anyone attempting to create internal crises has been reported to security agencies.

“If anybody claims the Labour Party has a faction, that is untrue. The caretaker committee issue is not in our constitution. Those claiming such positions are trying to destabilize the party,” he said, urging members to report any irregularities to authorities.

Meanwhile, LP senatorial aspirants for Nasarawa South and Nasarawa West, Ayiwulu Baba-Ayiwulu and Shehu Reuben, pledged to mobilise members for e-registration to strengthen the party’s position in the upcoming elections.

Ayiwulu said, “I am committed to securing the Nasarawa South senatorial seat and confident that the party will produce quality candidates across the state.”

Reuben added, “As young and capable aspirants, we are here to assure the people of Nasarawa West that we aim to provide effective leadership and representation for all.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
