KWANKWASO SLAMS EX-BORNO GOV OVER DISMISSAL OF PETER OBI’S NORTHERN SUPPORT

Former Kano State Governor and NDC vice-presidential hopeful, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has criticised ex-Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff for downplaying Peter Obi’s electoral strength in Northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso faulted Sheriff’s recent comments, describing them as disappointing and questioning his authority to speak on behalf of the Northern masses. He pointed out that Obi garnered approximately 2.8 million votes in the region during the 2023 presidential poll, a figure he said demonstrated significant support.
“It is curious that he has appointed himself spokesperson for the Northern masses. For the record, in his first outing on the presidential ballot, Mr. Obi secured about 2.8 million votes in the North,” Kwankwaso stated.
The NDC leader also highlighted the potential of an Obi-Kwankwaso ticket, arguing that current economic hardships could further strengthen opposition chances in the North. He urged Sheriff to focus on addressing security and humanitarian issues in Borno rather than engaging in divisive political commentary.
Sheriff had earlier claimed that Northern voters would not support Obi in 2027, citing alleged incidents during Obi’s time as Anambra governor. Kwankwaso dismissed these assertions as unfounded.
The exchange underscores ongoing manoeuvrings and rivalries within opposition circles as major political parties position themselves for the 2027 polls.
