Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has responded to recent comments by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, insisting that public officials must remain accountable and open to scrutiny.

Kingibe said her responsibility as a senator includes asking questions, demanding accountability and raising concerns over public funds and government decisions.

The senator was reacting to Wike’s criticism of her comments concerning loans obtained by the FCT Administration. She challenged the minister to provide the official Senate records showing that the borrowings were approved by the chamber.

Kingibe said she was not aware that the loans had been brought before the Senate for approval, while noting that she could not speak for the House of Representatives.

She also rejected Wike’s comments about her political future, saying no individual could determine who the people of the FCT would elect in the 2027 election.

Kingibe further said she would not be intimidated by political pressure or personal attacks. She maintained that women in public office should be able to question government decisions without being silenced.

She vowed to continue raising issues concerning the interests of FCT residents and scrutinising matters within her legislative responsibilities.
