The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, on Monday night undertook an emergency visit to Lagos following a fire outbreak at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

In a post shared via his X handle on Tuesday morning, the minister said he arrived at the airport around midnight and immediately joined the Managing Director and management team of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who were coordinating efforts to contain the incident.

Keyamo commended FAAN personnel and other first responders for their swift activation of emergency procedures, noting that their prompt and coordinated actions helped minimise the impact of the fire and safeguard lives.

He further disclosed that he had directed the FAAN Fire Department and the Lagos State Fire Service to maintain vigilance at the airport overnight to ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

“I commend FAAN personnel and first responders for their swift activation of established emergency procedures. Their prompt and coordinated actions were instrumental in safeguarding lives and limiting the impact of the incident,” he said.

“At dawn, I will be undertaking a tour of the airport to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire and to give necessary directives,” the minister added.

The affected facility, part of the airport’s older infrastructure, is currently undergoing renovation as part of broader efforts to upgrade facilities and improve passenger experience.

Confirming the incident, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said authorities were on the ground managing the situation.

“Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation. No loss of lives has been recorded. Further updates will follow,” he stated.

Passengers and airport users have been advised to remain calm as officials continue efforts to fully extinguish the fire and assess the extent of damage.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
