The future of Nigerian tennis looks bright as Kelvin Emmanuel, Abu Umar, Ohunene Yakubu, and Basit Ajao emerged champions at the 3rd Odele Age Group Tennis Tournament, an event dedicated to nurturing young talents across the country.

The competition, sponsored by philanthropist and tennis enthusiast Chief Gbolahan Odele and organised by Badejo Sports, recorded an impressive turnout of over 240 young players from across Nigeria and Ghana — a number that doubled last year’s attendance.

Chief Odele, who has been consistent in backing the event, expressed optimism that the annual age-grade tournament will one day produce national champions and even Grand Slam contenders.

“Nigeria is blessed with many talented tennis players, but they need exposure to improve and compete at higher levels,” Odele said. “That’s why we catch them young. I pray one of these kids will represent Nigeria at the Davis Cup and in Grand Slams someday.”

The finals produced thrilling matches across different categories:

Girls U-16: Kelvin Emmanuel defeated Ogunkolade Bisola 4-1, 4-0.

Boys U-16: Abu Umar edged past Damilola Agunbiade 5-4, 4-1.

Girls Youth: Ohunene Yakubu powered past Suwa Nenrot 6-2, 6-1.

Boys Youth: Basit Ajao beat Mamud Musa 6-2, 6-1.

Beyond the competition, Odele highlighted the tournament’s social impact, noting that the event not only develops athletes but also fosters lasting friendships among participants.

With its steady growth, the Odele Age Group Tournament is fast becoming one of the biggest youth tennis platforms in West Africa, giving kids between ages 8 and 16 a chance to showcase their potential.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
