KANO MAN SENTENCED FOR BURNING TYRES, ENDANGERING PUBLIC HEALTH
A Magistrate Court in Kano has sentenced a man, Ibrahim Abubakar, to three months in prison for burning car tyres and violating environmental safety laws.
The incident happened in the Tukuntawa Gidan Radio area, where Abubakar was caught in the act by police officers on patrol. Burning tyres releases toxic smoke that poses serious health and environmental risks, leading to strong complaints from concerned residents.
Following the reports, the Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched an investigation, led by the Director of Pollution Control, Ibrahim Nasir. The ministry’s legal team, represented by Barrister Bahijjah H. Aliyu, took the matter to court to ensure accountability.
During the hearing, the prosecution presented clear evidence highlighting the dangers of tyre burning to public health and the environment. After reviewing the case, the presiding judge, Auwalu Yusuf, found Abubakar guilty of violating environmental and public health laws.
The court ruled that Abubakar could either pay a fine or serve a three-month prison sentence.
The case sends a strong message about the importance of protecting the environment and the consequences of harmful practices like open tyre burning. Authorities have urged the public to report such activities and support efforts to keep communities clean and safe.
