The Kaduna State Government has inaugurated new basic education infrastructure and other interventions across the state’s 23 local government areas as part of efforts to improve learning conditions for pupils.

The projects were inaugurated at Sultan Bello Primary School in Kaduna North Local Government Area by Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe on behalf of Governor Uba Sani.

The governor said the administration had constructed or renovated 3,267 classrooms and provided 2,232 toilet facilities across the state. It also supplied 180 hand-pump boreholes to improve access to clean water in schools.

According to Sani, the government had further provided 87 science laboratories, 29 computer centres and 81,540 sets of furniture to improve teaching and learning conditions.

Four bilingual education schools were also completed in Igabi, Zaria, Kubau and Giwa in partnership with the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Islamic Development Bank. The schools provide 192 classrooms with capacity for about 7,680 learners, particularly children who are out of school.

The governor said the administration had distributed 545,748 teaching and learning materials covering literacy, numeracy, science and other subjects. He added that 33,137 teachers, head teachers and school support officers had received training in areas including computer skills, classroom management and school administration.

The Commissioner for Education, Abubakar Sambo, said the state had also introduced an annual Best Teacher of the Year Award to recognise outstanding educators.

He disclosed that the government had approved an increase in the minimum wage for primary school teachers from N38,000 to N72,000 and released N548m to retired teachers under the Nigeria Union of Teachers Endwell Scheme.

The state also inaugurated 18 smart boards, 55 motorcycles and three golf carts to support digital learning, school supervision and quality assurance across the state.
