Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has granted clemency to 27 inmates serving various sentences in correctional facilities across the state as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.

The latest exercise brings to more than 500 the number of inmates who have benefited from the governor’s prerogative of mercy since he assumed office in 2023.

The state government said the intervention involved the release of eligible inmates as well as the payment of fines and compensation exceeding N300m for victims since 2023.

Kaduna State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, James Kanyip, said the clemency exercise was carried out through established procedures and took into account accountability, rehabilitation and public safety.

He said the initiative was also aimed at helping eligible inmates reconnect with their families and communities and rebuild their lives.

The commissioner added that the state would continue to support rehabilitation, reconciliation and the reintegration of deserving inmates into society.

The government said the exercise reflected its approach to justice, which combines public safety with rehabilitation and opportunities for deserving inmates to return to society.
