KADUNA GOV HONOURS ATLANTA ’96 GOLD MEDALLISTS

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani has fulfilled a 30-year-old promise to members of Nigeria’s 1996 Atlanta Olympic gold-winning football team from the state.

The governor allocated plots of land to former Super Eagles stars Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro, who were part of the squad that won Nigeria’s first Olympic football gold medal in Atlanta. He also approved the naming of streets after some members of the victorious team.

Amokachi commended the governor for keeping the promise, saying the gesture had restored the athletes’ confidence in government.

He spoke while inspecting the ongoing reconstruction of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna alongside other football veterans.

The former striker said the recognition was significant because it showed that the contributions of the players had not been forgotten decades after their historic achievement.

The Atlanta ’96 team defeated Argentina 3–2 in the final to win the gold medal, becoming the first African country to achieve the feat in men’s Olympic football.

Governor Sani’s gesture comes as his administration continues efforts to improve sports infrastructure and promote sporting activities across Kaduna State.

The recognition of the former players has also renewed attention to the need for governments to honour athletes whose achievements have brought international recognition to Nigeria.
